A manufacturing process by which a liquid material is usually poured into mold, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, then allowed to solidify. The solid casting is then ejected/broken out to complete the process. Casting is most often used for making complex shapes that would be otherwise difficult or uneconomical to make by other method.

Is used to make large parts (typically Iron, but also Bronze, Brass, Aluminum). Molten metal is poured into a mold cavity formed out of sand (natural/synthetic). Sand castings generally have a rough surface sometimes with surface impurities, and surface variations. Therefore, a machining (finish) allowance is made for this type of defect.
